A 12-year-old gunman has been arrested after shooting up a middle school in East Oakland Monday, spurring a mass evacuation and a student to be hospitalized.
The shooting transpired Monday on the campus of Madison Park Academy, cops say, forcing officials to evacuate the school, situated in the Sobrante Park neighborhood of the California city.
The injured student, who cops said was 13, was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries, sustained during the attack by the pre-teen shooter.
Police said the gunman attempted to flee in the aftermath of the shooting, which occurred as the school day was winding to a close around 2 pm, but was captured.
Officials have yet to reveal if the suspect was a student at the school – the latest to be rocked by a mass shooting.

The gun used in the incident was located and retrieved.
The shooting and subsequent school evacuation caused a backup of traffic in the area – which is one of the most crime-ridden in the state – as parents rushed to pick up their kids upon learning of the incident.
Aerial helicopter footage shows the frenzy that then ensued, with hundreds of students, staffers, and parents crowded just off the campus as they attempted to locate their loved ones.
Video at the scene showed a crowd of parents and students standing in wait staring toward the school during the evacuation, which officials said was carried out successfully.
Police arrived on the scene Monday and arrested the pre-teen gunman, who cops said attempted to run in the frenzy that followed the premeditated attack

The Alameda Country Sheriff’s Office, who were among the first to respond to the scene, said upon deputies’ arrival, the 13-year-old victim was located and found to be suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
The child was then transported to a local hospital for treatment, where they currently remain. Cops have yet to shed light on the victim’s condition.
As of now, it appears the 13-year-old student was the sole victim of the seemingly premeditated strike, which is currently being probed by local police.

Initial local reports said the shooter had been on the run when cops arrived on the scene around 2:30 pm, but was quickly tracked down and apprehended.
Police have yet to provide a motive or identity for the young shooter, and have not commented on what sort of charges the minor will be subject to.
Considering the child’s age and the fact the currently non-fatal shooting transpired in one of the most progressive states in the US, it is likely that he, if convicted, the shooter could circumvent a harsh sentence.
Both the Oakland Police and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office remained on the scene in the hours after the suspect was apprehended. The two departments will be working on the case together. Neither have shared further details on the case or the victim’s condition.
