The Federal Government has announced that services along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor would resume on Monday, December 5, 2022.
The Managing Director of Nigeria Railway Corporation, Fidet Okhiria, told the News Agency of Nigeria, on Thursday that all was set for the resumption of the services.
Okhiria, however, advised passengers wishing to utilise the service to commence updating of their mobile app from December 3, to enable them to successfully book the ride.
According to the NRC boss, the services will commence with two train rides from Abuja-Kaduna and vice-versa.

“AK 1 will depart Idu Station at 9:45am and arrive Rigasa Station at 11:53am. KA 2 will depart Rigasa at 8:00am and arrive Idu station at 10:17am. AK 3 will depart Idu Station at 3:30pm and arrive Rigasa Station at 5:38pm. And KA 4 will depart Rigasa at 2pm and arrive Idu Station at 4:07pm.”
The NRC boss assured its esteemed passengers of the Federal Government’s commitment to ensure safety of lives and properties on board its train at all times.
NAN reports that the Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, during the test-run of the train on Sunday directed that Nigerians without a National Identification Number would not be allowed to board the train.
The minister said the security measures to be put in place before the commencement of services was 90 per cent completed.
“I think we are 90 per cent ready as far as what we are set to do is concerned. The remaining 10 per cent I am sure would be achieved in the next couple of days for full resumption of train services.”
“Your purchase of a ticket requires you to provide a phone number and a national identification number in order to profile, because that is the beginning of the security checks.
“So, at any point in time when a train moves from one station to another we know who and who are on board. If you don’t have a NIN, you are not going to board our train. It is as simple as that. If you are a minor, an adult will pay for you and will register for you and an adult can only register for not more than four minors,” Sambo said.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says God has been so patient with Nigeria.
He spoke Thursday in Abuja at the public presentation of a book titled, ‘The LetterMan: Inside the ‘Secret’ Letters of former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo’, by Premium Times’ Editor-in-Chief, Musikilu Mojeed.
Ethiopia civil war: How we brokered peace – Obasanjo
Don’t allow those messing up with your future succeed, Obasanjo charges youths
“I believe that God is in Nigeria, because God loves us so much that we got away so many stupid things. I sincerely hope that God’s patience have no limit of elasticity. Because if it does, there will be a day that God will say look, I have had enough.
“And if God says he has had enough, it doesn’t matter; Musikilu can write 20 books on letter men and letter women, it won’t help us.
“So, I believe that the right lessons must be learned. We have all that we need to have. God gave us all that we need to have. That we are not doing what we need to do, God is not to blame. We should blame ourselves,” the former President said.
Obasanjo served as Nigeria’s head of state from 1976 to 1979 and later as its president from 1999 to 2007.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the United Nations (UN) has decried the low level of women participation in the elections as unacceptable, and needed to be urgently addressed to deepen democracy and national development.
The UN Women Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms. Beatrice Eyong, said this in Abuja at a workshop on ‘Promoting Women’s Political Participation in Nigeria’ organised by Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), UN Women, Government of Canada and Federal Government of Nigeria.
According to her, Nigeria is one of the lowest countries in women representation across the globe despite their contribution and numerical strength.
Ms. Eyong, represented at the event by the UN Programme Special, Desmond Osalobo Osemehenjie, said women’s participation in politics in Nigeria is appalling, unsatisfactory, and unacceptable.

“Comparing Nigeria with other African countries, Nigeria is just 4.1 percent in the parliament as we speak, while in other countries like Rwanda is 67 percent, and Senegal is about 57 percent.
“If you look at the African sub region, Nigeria is one of the lowest countries as far as representation on the parliament is concerned. Nigeria is just 4.1 percent in the parliament, as we speak, while in other countries like Rwanda is 67 percent, Senegal is sending about 57 percent,” she said.
She listed political education of African women, which she said is very new, and which was why women have not over the years been able to get their feet in political education in Nigeria.
On way forward, she said the UN has been doing a lot of advocacy and awareness creation and capacity building for women.
“We support the media, we also support the political parties, building the capacity of women, and ensuring that women are able to compete effectively. We have also in one way or the other, provide a kind of both internal and external training to women, where they go outside to learn from other nations where they have been able to advance.
“We make representation that will also support them. We are training the young women known as a Young Women Academy, where if in future we want the young women that are interested in governance, to be able to jump into political parties and be able to change the narrative.”
Also, the President of Women in Politics Forum (WIPF), Mrs. Ebere Ifendu, stressed the importance of ensuring greater participation of women in politics.
She said participation of women has proven to be catalyst for development in other parts of the world, thus Nigeria cannot afford to miss the opportunity.

Spain staggered through to the World Cup last 16 on Thursday despite a 2-1 defeat by Japan, who remarkably won Group E on a rollercoaster night which saw four-time champions Germany eliminated.
Japan secured another incredible triumph after beating Germany in their opening game, with their progression from the “group of death” one of the greatest achievements in the country’s footballing history.
For a few heart-stopping minutes Spain were poised to head out when Costa Rica were leading in the other game, but the 2010 champions squeezed through after Germany did them a favour by coming back to beat Los Ticos.
Spain and Germany ended on four points each, but La Roja progressed on goal difference.
Alvaro Morata sent Spain ahead early on with a towering header, but Japan dramatically struck back at the start of the second half.
Ritsu Doan and Ao Tanaka’s goals saw them mount a sensational comeback, just as they did against Germany.
Tanaka’s goal was highly controversial after the officials relied on VAR to decide Kaoru Mitoma had kept the ball in play by a hair’s breadth to set him up.
Spain struggled to create chances against a staunch Japanese defence in the final stages, with the Asian side aware that conceding another goal would see them eliminated.
Japanese players collapsed at full-time in celebration, exhausted and elated, while the substitutes raced on to celebrate.
Spain face Morocco in the last 16, while Japan play Croatia.

Germany crashed out of the World Cup at the group stage for the second time in succession despite a 4-2 win against Costa Rica on Thursday.
The four-time World Cup winners came into the match needing a win but were also relying on the result of Japan’s game with Spain to progress.
But the Germans were eliminated due to goal difference as Japan followed up their defeat of Germany with another shock result by beating Spain 2-1.
Germany took an early lead but briefly fell behind in the second half as coach Hansi Flick made a flurry of changes, reacting to the live score of Japan v Spain fixture.
The Germans started positively, with Flick’s all-Bayern Munich front line turning the screws early, battering the Costa Rica defence before Serge Gnabry got his head to a curling cross from Leipzig defender David Raum after 10 minutes to open the scoring.
Midfielder Leon Goretzka almost doubled Germany’s lead just five minutes later but his header was directly at Keylor Navas.
Complacency began to creep into Germany’s game. Keysher Fuller, Costa Rica’s goal-scoring hero in a 1-0 win against Japan, forced Manuel Neuer into a fingertip save after some half-hearted defending from Raum and Antonio Ruediger.
Flick moved Kimmich back to his familiar defensive midfield position at half-time, bringing on Lukas Klostermann at the expense of Goretzka, who like Kimmich started the match on a yellow.
Just seven minutes into the second half, word crept around the vast Lusail Stadium that Japan had scored two quick goals to take the lead against Spain, a result which would force Germany out of the tournament.
Flick reacted immediately, bringing on Niclas Fuellkrug and taking off another midfielder in Ilkay Gundogan.
Germany appeared disjointed as Costa Rica went on the counter on the 58-minute mark, the ball rebounding off Neuer and into the path of Yeltsin Tejeda, who slammed it home.
Flick continued to chase the game, making more changes but it was Costa Rica who scored next when Juan Pablo Vargas tapped a free kick past Neuer. The goal was later recorded as an own goal.
Germany hit back minutes later through Chelsea forward Kai Havertz to draw level.
Havertz scored again in the 86th minute and Fuellkrug added another in the 89th minute to bring the score to 4-2, but the side’s focus remained nervously fixed on the group’s parallel fixture.
The night ended with Germany losing out to second-placed Spain on goal difference.
It means Germany, who had not missed out on the knockout stages of a World Cup for 80 years until the 2018 tournament in Russia, have been bundled out in the group stage for the second World Cup in a row.

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, has faulted the Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, over the poor state of infrastructure in the state.
Speaking Thursday at the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential campaign rally in Yenagoa, Sylva while commenting on the position of Bayelsa as the second poorest state in Nigeria, said the incumbent administration did not prepare for governance.
Sylva, a former governor of Bayelsa State, said: “Bayelsa is an APC state. Look at the state of Bayelsa State now. This state, according to National Statistics, is the second poorest state in the whole of Nigeria.
“You can see why it is so. Can an umbrella protect you from the flood?
“We had serious flooding in Bayelsa that affected every home and every family in the state. The state government had been warned about it for a long time that the flood was coming but they had no preparation for the flood.
“You can also see when you walk on the streets of Bayelsa, you can see that they were not even prepared but today I am not here to talk about Bayelsa state because that battle is coming later and we know that that battle has already been won today.”
He also said the APC presidential candidate is the best among arrays of candidates jostling to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
According to Sylva, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu is very presidential.
“He has a track record that nobody can beat. When they asked me why I am so sure that Tinubu is the best Presidential candidate, I also asked them who is contesting with him because I don’t know,” the Minister said.
On his part, Yekini Nabena, who is the Chairman, campaign publicity committee, said they were using the outing to send a message to the Diri-led Bayelsa state government that the state belongs to the APC.
“We are all here, the state is in darkness, physically we are here, it is not on paper. We have seen everywhere, everywhere is dirty.
“Our state cannot continue to suffer in this present state. We must rescue the state – we are the second poorest state after Sokoto. How can that be?” Nabena stated.

The spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council, Dino Melaye, has said that nobody knows Tinubu in the core North.
Melaye stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.
The former lawmaker said that the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, is the only nationalist among the 18 presidential candidates, who has friends in every nook and cranny of Nigeria.
He said, “Atiku is the most trusted candidate of all the 18 presidential candidates in the 2023 elections. The West is comfortable with Atiku, Southerners are comfortable with Atiku, the Hausa-Fulani, the Ijaws, everybody is comfortable with Atiku Abubakar because he is not only a pan-Nigerian, even witches and wizards can’t accuse him of being a religious bigot or an ethnic jingoist; because we all know, everyone in this country knows Atiku Abubakar.
“As I speak with you, when trying to pick the ticket of PDP he went to every part of the country and he was welcomed and Atiku is the only presidential candidate who got votes from every zone in this country.
“Tinubu did not visit even the entire South West; he didn’t go to any state in the South East when he was going round seeking the ticket of his party. Go to the core North and say Tinubu; nobody knows who Tinubu is. Go to the South East they don’t know who Tinubu is.”

Bauchi State Ministry of Health has disclosed that the state has recorded over 2,000 new cases of HIV/AIDS in 2022 in the state.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Sabiu Abdu Gwalabe, who made this known on Thursday during a press conference to mark the World AIDS Day in the state explained that 98 per cent of the over 2,000 new cases were linked to treatment within this year alone.
He added, “This is the highest number of new cases detected in any year in the state, which was due to the dedication and new approaches deployed by our staff and partners.
“The state currently has an estimated number of about 30,000 people living with HIV.
“Out of the 30,000, 29,160 of them have already been identified representing 97 per cent. Likewise, 27,639 of those who knew their HIV positive status are currently on treatment representing 95 percent coverage.”
He, however, revealed that there was gradual but consistent reduction in the prevalence of HIV in the state to only 0.4 percent in 2019 which was much lower than the national prevalence of 1.5 percent approximately totaling about 3 million people living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.

Spanish police are investigating Thursday a series of letter bombs sent to targets including the prime minister and the US embassy, similar to the one which went off at the Ukrainian embassy, hurting a staff member.
The interior ministry revealed that an envelope with “pyrotechnic material” had arrived at Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s official residence on November 24. It was destroyed in a controlled explosion.
Spain’s High court meanwhile announced it had broadened an initial investigation over the Ukraine embassy letter bomb to cover all the other incidents.
Both announcements came a day after the security officer at Ukraine’s embassy in Madrid suffered a light injury to one hand while opening a letter bomb addressed to the Ukrainian ambassador, an incident that prompted Kyiv to boost security at its embassies worldwide.
That letter, like the others discovered, arrived by regular mail.
Later in the evening, a second “suspicious postal shipment” was intercepted at the headquarters of military equipment firm Instalaza in the northeastern city of Zaragoza, the interior ministry said.
Instalaza makes the grenade launchers that Spain donates to Ukraine.
Then on Thursday morning letter bombs arrived and at the defence ministry; and at an air base in Torrejon de Ardoz, just outside Madrid, from where weapons donated by Spain are sent to Ukraine.
“The characteristics of the envelopes, as well as their content, are similar in the five cases,” Spain’s Secretary of State of Security, Rafael Perez, told journalists.
“There are signs that indicate that the letters came from Spanish territory, but I insist we must be prudent…we are at the beginning of the investigation.”
A few hours after he spoke the interior ministry said another letter “with similar characteristics as the others” had been intercepted at the US embassy in Madrid.
‘Terrorist methods’
Ukraine’s ambassador to Spain, Serhii Pohoreltsev, appeared to blame Russia for the letter bomb at its embassy.
“We are well aware of the terrorist methods of the aggressor country,” he said during an interview late Wednesday with Spanish public television.
“Russia’s methods and attacks require us to be ready for any kind of incident, provocation or attack,” he added.
But in a statement, Thursday, Russia’s embassy in Spain said: “Any threat or terrorist act, especially those that target a diplomatic mission, is to be totally condemned.”
The letter to the defence ministry was addressed to Defence Minister Margarita Robles. The one sent to the air base was meant for a European Union satellite centre located there.
That centre supports the bloc’s foreign and security policy by gathering information from satellite imagery, according to its website.
After scanning the envelope that arrived at the air base by X-ray, security officers determined it contained “a mechanism”, the ministry statement said. Police were still analysing the envelope.
‘Soaked in red liquid’
In Ukraine, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said three embassies had now received threatening letters.
The letters had not contained explosives but another substance, he added, saying only that they had been “soaked in red liquid”.
Kuleba has already ordered the strengthening of security at all of their embassies, the country’s foreign ministry said Wednesday after the letter bomb went off at the embassy in Madrid.
Spain’s interior minister said it had ordered increased security measures at all embassies and consulates in the country, as well as “other sites that require special protection”.
Security had already been boosted in February after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In addition to sending arms to help Ukraine, Spain is training Ukrainian troops as part of a European Union programme and providing humanitarian aid.

Lawmakers exchanged blows and hurled a chair in Senegal’s parliament on Thursday over a perceived insult towards an influential pro-opposition religious leader.
An opposition MP slapped legislator Amy Ndiaye over her remarks, according to images on television and social media that were authenticated by AFP.
She responded by throwing a chair at him and then fell to the ground, where she was helped by fellow members of her group.
A fistfight then erupted among MPs before the speaker suspended the session.
The bust-up erupted during a vote on the justice ministry’s budget for 2023.
It was sparked by remarks Ndiaye made about Serigne Moustapha Sy, a Muslim leader who supports the opposition but is not a lawmaker.
On November 27, she accused him of betraying his word and disrespecting President Macky Sall, according to media reports.
MP Abba Mbaye told an opposition TV channel that opposition lawmakers would oppose any resumption of parliamentary work “until this lady has apologised”.
Some members of the governing coalition, as well as feminist activists, lashed the physical attack on Ndiaye, which coincided with an awareness campaign about violence against women and girls.
Senegal is widely viewed as a beacon of stability and democracy in West Africa – a region notorious for coups and dictatorships.
Legislative elections in July led to a virtual tie, requiring Sall’s party to forge a coalition to stay in power.
Sall was elected to a seven-year term in 2012 and re-elected for a five-year tenure in 2019.
He has not divulged his plans for the next presidential vote, due in 2024.

Morocco powered into the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time in 36 years on Thursday with a 2-1 victory over eliminated Canada.
Goals from Hakim Ziyech and Youssef En-Nesyri ensured the North Africans finished top of Group F ahead of 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia.
Morocco, who last reached the knockout stages of the World Cup in 1986, will face the runners-up from Group E in the last 16, with the identity of their opponents decided later Thursday.
Canada’s defeat meanwhile capped a disappointing World Cup for the CONCACAF side, who depart after losing all three of their group games on their long-awaited return to the finals.
Morocco put themselves firmly on course for the second round after upsetting Belgium 2-0 on Sunday, a result that left them needing only a point against Canada on Thursday to be sure of advancing.
Achieving that objective never looked in doubt after the Moroccans grabbed the lead after only four minutes in front of 43,102 fans at the Al-Thumama Stadium.
Canada captain and goalkeeper Milan Borjan raced off his line to clear an under-hit backpass from Steven Vitoria but could only watch in horror as the ball fell to Morocco’s Ziyech.
The Chelsea star seized the opportunity ruthlessly, coolly lifting a finish over the stranded Borjan into the empty net for 1-0.
That early setback winded Canada, who struggled to gain any sort of a foothold against a rampant Morocco who were soon 2-0 up.
Right-back Achraf Hakimi’s long ball caught the Canadian defence napping and En-Nesyri darted in behind before smashing home a finish at the near post to beat Borjan.
Canada pulled a goal back on a rare foray forward five minutes from half-time when defender Sam Adekugbe skipped clear down the left and rifled in a low cross.
Defender Nayef Aguerd stuck a leg out and the ball deflected into the net past Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to make it 2-1.
Morocco thought they had restored their two-goal cushion in first-half stoppage time when En-Nesyri lashed home eight yards out only for the effort to be deemed offside.
Canada started the second half brightly, with Alphonso Davies jabbing a shot just wide after a promising attack.
But Morocco dropped deeper and Canada lacked the inventiveness to seriously threaten.
Their best chance of drawing level came from a setpiece in 71 minutes, when substitute Atiba Hutchinson’s header from a corner crashed off the underside of the crossbar and bounced off the goal-line.
Full-back Alistair Johnston failed to control the rebound and Morocco’s lead remained intact.
Canada captain Borjan almost got caught out again in another risky advance in injury time, but Davies was on hand to snuff out the danger before Morocco’s raucous fans erupted in celebration at the whistle.
